The history of Modern architecture and design in the 20th century has long been centered around the individual accomplishments of architects and designers who were generally white and male, and so there is a misconception that there is "not a lot" of work by women or people of color, or that it is "hard to find." However, just a little bit of searching will actually yield a lot of results, especially if we expand our understanding of architecture and design to include all of the people who contribute to a project, not just the lead architect.
In honor of Black History Month, we are sharing a very non-exhaustive list of just some of the Black Modernist architects and designers you should know, and some of the important projects they worked on. All of these designers can be found on our Designers page, and the projects associated with them are included on the Explore Modern Registry.
We continue to expand these resources on a regular basis. If you would like to suggest a site to add to the register you can submit one here. You can suggest designers to add by emailing us at info@docomomo-us.org.
