On Sunday, October 1, Docomomo US/Chicago will explore one of the most peculiar chapters in Chicago transportation and urban renewal history. North Ogden Avenue was once a major arterial street that was extended from Union Park to Lincoln Park at enormous expense and disruption in the 1930s. Thirty years later, the City changed their mind and began closing and redeveloping the Ogden Avenue footprint in stages starting in 1967.

From its spatial fusion of in-and-out-of-doors to its innovative handling of change, Rose’s national register-listed home is a unique expression of some of the twentieth century’s most advanced modern design thinking. In a unique opportunity within Rose’s home itself, this lecture explores the origins and evolution of Rose’s modern design concepts from his student years in the 1930s until his passing in 1991, as it analyzes how they led to the design and evolution of what is likely his most significant work: his own home in Ridgewood, NJ.

After World War II, the University of Massachusetts Amherst embarked upon one of the most ambitious academic building programs in the United States. Following a 1963 master plan by renowned landscape architect, Hideo Sasaki, UMass Amherst employed some of the most distinguished architects of the time, among them Marcel Breuer, Kevin Roche, and Edward Durell Stone. The tour will investigate their distinctive Brutalist buildings and how they are now being reimagined after serving generations of students well.

The Glass House, built between 1949 and 1995 by architect Philip Johnson, is a National Trust Historic Site located in New Canaan, Connecticut. The pastoral 49-acre landscape comprises fourteen structures, including the Glass House (1949), and features a permanent collection of 20th-century painting and sculpture, along with temporary exhibitions. Join us for an open house and talk at the William Landsberg home in Port Washington, Long Island, renovated and restored by Stephen Moser Architects. The 1951 house was designed by and for Landsberg, who studied at Harvard University with Marcel Breuer and later worked for him. In 1956, Landsberg established his own architecture practice, gaining regional fame for his Bauhaus-inspired designs.

The University of Illinois at Chicago Circle was created between 1963 and 1968 as an “instant campus” in response to major growth in college enrollment following WWII. Its Brutalist design by Walter Netsch and SOM became a nationally recognized model for other campuses across the country, even as it displaced thousands of neighborhood residents and sparked local grassroots protests through its program of urban renewal. This tour will start and conclude at the famed School of Architecture and include visits to the buildings and spaces at UIC that have delighted and frustrated users since the day they opened.

Detroit was at the forefront of the urban renewal movement in the mid-20th century with projects like Lafayette Park and the Medical Center. These developments, however, were built on the bones of two once-thriving Black neighborhoods, Black Bottom and Paradise Valley. Led by Detroit historian Jamon Jordan, the tour will explore how urban renewal changed the buildings, landscapes, and people of Detroit.

This year's Tour Day event is in honor of local architect Robert Trudeau, who passed away this summer. We'll tour his unique and innovative Cohoes Central Firehouse, c.1967. His son Bart (now the head of the firm) and others from Mr. Trudeau's office will be in attendance.

Elegant in its Midcentury Modern simplicity, this house, designed by Wynant D. Vanderpool Jr., must be moved from its current location to be saved. The single level residence was constructed in 1952 for Atle Selberg, a noted mathematician recruited to the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ. Other scholars of the Institute include Albert Einstein and Robert Oppenheimer. A vigorous marketing campaign has been launched to find a buyer that will relocate the structure. Tour this house and absorb the largely original design.

Houston Mod, in collaboration with Project Row Houses Houston, presents a walking tour of the recently restored Eldorado Ballroom in Houston's Third Ward.

This famous biennial tour includes an exhibition, Circle Square Triangle: The architecture of Myron Goldfinger, lunch with keynote speaker Jorge Otero-Pailos, an architect-led tour of four midcentury modern home in New Canaan, and a closing reception.

The Schweikher House, voted best Modernist site in Chicagoland by Docomomo US/Chicago social media followers in 2023, invites the public to a reception at the Schweikher House in Schaumburg, IL.

The 2023 national theme for Docomomo US Revisiting Urban Renewal, which will be embraced in Docomomo Hawaii’s annual walking tour on Saturday October 21, 2023. Starting at 10 a.m. at the Liliha Public Library and concluding at Queen Emma Gardens, the tour will look at a number of the Honolulu Redevelopment Agency’s (HRA) projects, as well as several projects which emerged from the 1950s expansion of Vineyard Boulevard and the private redevelopment of Liliha Street on the lands adjoining Vineyard.

Minoru Yamasaki, Detroit’s best-known midcentury architect, left his mark all over the city. Locally he designed office buildings, houses of worships, educational institutions, and residences. Learn how Yamasaki came to Wayne State University in the mid-1950s to extend and execute their master plan with new buildings and a pedestrian-friendly campus, and then helped to establish the College for Creative Studies' new 1950s campus. This tour explores Yamasaki’s legacy in Detroit's Cultural Center, including a stop at Wayne State University’s magnificent McGregor Memorial Conference Center and reflecting pool.

Modernism Week, the annual festival that highlights midcentury modern architecture, art, interior and landscape design, and vintage culture in the Palm Springs area of Southern California, will offer Modernism Week – October from October 19-22, 2023.

Join Docomomo US/MN in Downtown Saint Paul for a guided walking tour as we explore Modernist buildings that were developed as part of urban renewal efforts in the capital city.

A unique chapter in the story of urban renewal, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts was the nation’s first performing arts complex. It was also part of the larger 45-acre Lincoln Square Urban Renewal Project, which included the Lincoln Towers housing complex, Fordham University, and community facilities. Directed by Robert Moses, the project erased the San Juan Hill neighborhood, displacing more than 7,000 families, largely African American, and 800 businesses.

The 1950s Washington Square Southeast urban renewal project—a reduced version of an earlier, broader Washington Square South plan—cleared nine blocks of Greenwich Village to create three "superblocks." One was designated for New York University expansion, the others for housing. All now belong to the University. The tour will view the built results including work by Philip Johnson, I. M. Pei and Hideo Sasaki and discuss their subsequent evolution.
