KCmodern Presents Crown Center Walking Tour: Revisiting Urban Renewal as part of Docomomo US Tour Day.

Join KCmodern at Crown Center to see Kansas City’s theme park of Modernism by internationally acclaimed architects. We will visit work by names like Welton Becket, Victor Gruen, Edward Larabee Barnes, Warren Platner, Harry Weese, the Architects Collaborative, Kivett & Myers, the Office of Mies Van der Rohe, Pei Cobb Freed and Dan Kiley. These buildings were built from the 1950's-1980s, but we will focus on the buildings from the 1970s. 

Orientation presented by Rachel Consolloy from Rosin Preservation, authors of the Crown Center National Register Nomination. Gathering after the tour at BNIM Architects, located in the Pershing Road Office Building from 3:00-5:00 PM with white wine & beer included.

This tour will require a substantial amount of walking for up to 2 hours - wear your walking shoes!

Walking Tour: The Extension and Removal of Ogden Avenue

On Sunday, October 1, Docomomo US/Chicago will explore one of the most peculiar chapters in Chicago transportation and urban renewal history. North Ogden Avenue was once a major arterial street that was extended from Union Park to Lincoln Park at enormous expense and disruption in the 1930s. Thirty years later, the City changed their mind and began closing and redeveloping the Ogden Avenue footprint in stages starting in 1967.

Renewal or Removal? Revisiting Mid-Century Urbanism in Detroit

Detroit was at the forefront of the urban renewal movement in the mid-20th century with projects like Lafayette Park and the Medical Center. These developments, however, were built on the bones of two once-thriving Black neighborhoods, Black Bottom and Paradise Valley. Led by Detroit historian Jamon Jordan, the tour will explore how urban renewal changed the buildings, landscapes, and people of Detroit.
