A unique chapter in the story of urban renewal, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts was the nation’s first performing arts complex. It was also part of the larger 45-acre Lincoln Square Urban Renewal Project, which included the Lincoln Towers housing complex, Fordham University, and community facilities. Directed by Robert Moses, the project erased the San Juan Hill neighborhood, displacing more than 7,000 families, largely African American, and 800 businesses.

The 1950s Washington Square Southeast urban renewal project—a reduced version of an earlier, broader Washington Square South plan—cleared nine blocks of Greenwich Village to create three "superblocks." One was designated for New York University expansion, the others for housing. All now belong to the University. The tour will view the built results including work by Philip Johnson, I. M. Pei and Hideo Sasaki and discuss their subsequent evolution.

The Glass House, built between 1949 and 1995 by architect Philip Johnson, is a National Trust Historic Site located in New Canaan, Connecticut. The pastoral 49-acre landscape comprises fourteen structures, including the Glass House (1949), and features a permanent collection of 20th-century painting and sculpture, along with temporary exhibitions.
