Docomomo US will kick off its online educational lecture series Mission for Modernism with a discussion on hotel atriums with Charles Rice, professor of architecture at the University of Technology, Sydney and moderator Anthony Paletta. Charles Rice will discuss all things to do with atria, from the emergence of the modern atrium hotel, to its proliferation in many building types globally through the 1970s, 80s and beyond. Along the way he will offer insights into the way architecture changed as a profession in this period, as a practice guided by the progressive tenets of modernism turned into a professional service fully integrated within neoliberal social and economic imperatives. Anthony Paletta, recent author of "How the American Atrium Hotel Became A Global Icon" for Bloomberg CityLab will pick up on these insights with Rice to ask what we can learn from them and their value to cities today.
