The Lay of the Land

The New Haven Colony was established in 1638 by Puritans along the Long Island Sound and Quinnipiac River, on land acquired from the Quinnipiac tribe. The Puritan vision for New Haven’s town plan included the creation of nine perfect squares, with the center square open, common space with the church at its heart, now known as the New Haven Green. Though the squares were later subdivided and the agricultural land surrounding the nine squares was developed, the nine squares remain the center of New Haven and referred to as downtown New Haven. The city is conveniently located 80 miles to the northeast of New York City and 140 miles to the southwest of Boston in the junction of Interstates 95 and 91.

The Docomomo US National Symposium will take place in the heart of New Haven’s nine squares and will venture farther afield to include the Wooster Square neighborhood (home some of the best pizza in the United States), the Long Wharf area including Hotel Marcel, the Yale University campus, as well as many of the surrounding residential communities. New Haven has many other dynamic and diverse neighborhoods, and regularly ranks among the country's most walkable cities in addition to being named one of the 52 Places to Go in 2023 by the New York Times. We know you’ll enjoy exploring New Haven and learning about its history and architecture during your time here!

Venues

This year’s events will rotate between downtown New Haven and the Long Wharf (Hotel Marcel). Wednesday, June 21 begins at the Yale Art Gallery for our opening keynote, followed by a reception at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Thursday entails educational sessions at Hotel Marcel in the morning, followed by walking tours in the afternoon. Friday we head back downtown and close with the final plenary at Yale.

Getting Around

Did you know that the Hotel Marcel is not only LEED Certified by the US Greenbuilding Council, but is a carbon net-zero, fully sustainable historic hotel? Celebrating this successful unification of sustainability and respect for the property's historic value, Docomomo is encouraging guests to be mindful of their own carbon footprint.

Please note, guests will be responsible for their own transportation between hotel properties and event venues. Below you will find a number of user and carbon-friendly options in New Haven.

Walking

Downtown New Haven is a very walkable city. Enjoy a brisk 1.2 mile walk from the hotel to the New Haven greens. Depending on your walking pace, please allow 20-25 mins.

Bike Sharing

New Haven has worked to expand their network of bike lanes in recent years. Biking is an enjoyable, inexpensive, and environmentally-friendly way to experience the city.

For more information and an interactive map of New Haven's bike lanes see the City of New Haven website.

Note that Bike New Haven’s Bike Share has been permanently put on hold due to COVID.

Ride Share

The ever popular rideshare option is alive and well in New Haven. Lyft and Ubers riders even have the ability to set up rides and/or returns in advance.

New to ridesharing? No worries. Hotel Marcel’s concierge desk has a Lyft specialist that can assist!

Hotel Shuttle

Hotel Marcel has a 14-passenger electric van that provides complimentary transportation for hotel guests. Please note, this van is on a first come, first served basis and is available to the entire hotel, not just Docomomo guests.

The CTtransit system runs bus services in New Haven. It's user friendly for locals and visitors alike. The bus stops every two to three blocks between New Haven’s suburban neighborhoods and urban areas. Find specific route information here.

Bus fare on CTtransit is currently free through March 2023. Expect an update here if this fare suspension is expanded.

Hotel Accommodations

Docomomo US is pleased to offer discounts to a variety of New Haven hotels during the National Symposium. The Hotel Marcel is the preferred hotel of the Symposium. Hotel Marcel & the La Quinta Inn & Suites are located in the Long Wharf area, a short drive from downtown New Haven. The Study, Omni, and Courtyard by Marriott are located in the downtown/Yale vicinity.

THE HOTEL MARCEL

The Hotel Marcel is the preferred hotel of the Symposium and will be the venue for Thursday morning’s paper sessions.

Conceived as a dramatic gateway to New Haven, the roots of this iconic building began with the Armstrong Rubber Company, one of America's premier tire production companies, founded in West Haven in 1912. Today the building is a landmark of the striking design and architecture of the era. After many years of advocacy to save the long-vacant site, today it stands renewed with artfully detailed interiors and a climate-first credo. Aligned with the craft-meets-utility ethos of The Bauhaus, Hungarian-born architect Marcel Breuer experimented with new advances in technology and building materials to create an architectural framework that seems to defy gravity. Beneath its Brutalist exterior is a utopian feat of sustainable engineering using solar electricity to power the entire building. Custom-designed minimalist guest rooms and suites offer stylish serenity along with waterfront and city skyline views. A highly-curated collection of art throughout public and guest room spaces spotlights a mosaic of original works and site-specific installations by contemporary, local and emerging artists. The hotel brings modern day experiences to guests through streamlined coworking tables, reimagined historic architectural lighting, Bauhaus-inspired patterned area rugs, and original textile and graphic print artworks.

Located at 500 Sargent Drive. Thursday morning sessions will be on-site at the hotel. Other Symposium events taking place in downtown New Haven are a short car ride away.
