Award of Excellence

2026

An Advocacy Award of Excellence is presented to preservation architect T. Gunny Harboe, FAIA, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the preservation of modern architecture in Chicago, across the United States, and internationally. As a founding board member of Docomomo US and a longtime leader of the Docomomo US/Chicago chapter, he has been instrumental in advancing recognition and protection of modern architecture and in building a stronger national preservation movement for the recent past. Through his practice, scholarship, and advocacy, Harboe has championed some of the most significant and challenging sites of twentieth-century architecture. He is widely recognized as an expert in the preservation of Frank Lloyd Wright’s work, bringing exceptional discipline to conservation efforts while advancing broader understanding of their architectural and cultural significance. He is a steadfast advocate for the preservation of Chicago’s remarkable modernist legacy, making the case for why modern architecture deserves the same thoughtful stewardship afforded to earlier historic periods. Harboe’s influence also reaches the international preservation community through his work with ICOMOS, where he has contributed his expertise to advancing principles and practices for conserving modern heritage. Harboe has been a tireless and persuasive voice for modern architecture, helping establish preservation frameworks, mentor emerging professionals, raise public awareness, and build consensus around threatened and significant places. His leadership exemplifies the power of individual advocacy to transform how modern architecture is understood, valued, and preserved for future generations.

“Gunny is an indefatigable advocate for twentieth-century architecture and an extraordinary steward of our heritage,” said Liz Waytkus. “He has consistently spoken up when others would not, and his deep knowledge and commitment have made him an invaluable resource to me and to the preservation community. Gunny has often been my eyes and ears on preservation issues as they emerge, helping to bring attention to places and stories that might otherwise go unnoticed. We owe him an enormous debt of gratitude for his tireless advocacy and his remarkable stewardship of our historic places.”

- Liz Waytkus, Docomomo US Executive Director
