A Residential Design Citation of Merit is awarded for the restoration of College View Home, a 1951 house designed by Charles Goodman and Associates. Located in the historic Hammond Wood neighborhood of Silver Spring, Maryland, it is part of a community of 56 midcentury homes featured in Progressive Architecture in 1952. The project carefully balanced two complementary goals: restoring Goodman’s original design as faithfully as possible, while adapting the interior spaces to accommodate modern living conditions. Affordable design for middle-class homeowners was a critical theme in Goodman’s residential work, achieved with standard and pre-fabricated materials. The restoration continued this philosophy by using standard building materials and a simple materials palette throughout. Custom materials and construction were reserved for special moments throughout the spatial experience. Exterior work included installing new siding, rebuilding of the wood windows in their original configuration, and restoration of original brickwork and stone walls. Interior updates included an expanded galley-style kitchen with custom Poggenpohl cabinetry; a restored and expanded living room; reconfigured entrance with added storage; and the addition of two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a den in the basement. The restored Goodman house serves as a reminder that quality architectural design can be achieved at a wide variety of economies and scales.
