“Tiki Modernism: Design History Drinks” was Docomomo US/Northern California’s latest event and a fundraiser for our upcoming scholarship for preservation students. Local historian and preservation consultant Christopher VerPlanck gave a presentation on the history of tiki bars and tiki design in the region. It was a sequel to his 2011 talk, which focused what he learned while researching San Francisco’s Tonga Room bar for its 2009 preservation bid. (Plans to demolish the Tonga Room were ultimately canceled because of VerPlanck and others’ work.) The event sold out in three days and received almost 1,700 interested guests on Facebook, and we raised more than $500 for our scholarship fund.
