Protesters gather to save Johnson's iconic AT&T building

On Friday November 3rd, preservationists, enthusiasts, and Robert A.M. Stern gathered outside Philip Johnson's controversial AT&T building to protest proposed changes to the iconic building. The proposal was announced by the Oslo- and New York-based architecture firm Snøhetta on October 30th and immediately sparked an outcry from the architectural community.

In a statement made to the press, Docomomo US said: "Radical for its return to ornamentation and playfulness of design, the AT&T building is without question a New York City landmark with broad significance to the story of American architecture. Long misunderstood, much like its Postmodern counterpart the Portland Building, the AT&T building is a door to the future of design."
