Docomomo US is pleased to welcome the Liljestrand House to the Explore Modern Partnership.

If you are lucky enough to live in or to be visiting Hawaii any time soon, please add the impeccably preserved Liljestrand House to your bucket list while you are there. Sited atop Mount Tantalus in Honolulu, this single-family home, completed in 1952, is considered one of the masterworks of architect Vladimir Ossipoff. The Liljestrand family remained lifelong friends with Ossipoff and no changes were ever made to the structure or interior elements of the house, including furnishings and artwork, without consulting him. Ossipoff designed the house to showcase the 270-degree view of Honolulu and the natural beauty of the surrounding forest was an important element incorporated into the design. Those who joined us at the 2019 National Symposium were treated to a tour of the home and can attest to its stunning beauty.

The Liljestrand Foundation was created by the Liljestrand family in 2007 with the vision of preserving the house, its site, and archives, and making that preservation beneficial to the global community. Preservation of the house is made possible through donations and public tour and program revenues.

Docomomo US members receive a discounted rate of 20% off the regular ticketed rate for 90-minute group tours. Use the code included in your membership acknowledgment email or reach out to info@docomomo-us.org

Believing that one of the best ways to foster increased awareness and appreciation for significant sites is to experience them firsthand, Docomomo US launched the Explore Modern Partnership in 2018 to make it easier for Docomomo US members to visit exceptional modern homes across the country. The program provides exclusive discounts to participating sites for Docomomo US members. Participating sites include: Philip Johnson's Glass House, Alden B. Dow's Home & Studio in Midland, MI, the James Rose Residence in Ridgewood, NJ, the Edith Farnsworth House and McCormick House, the Cocoon House and Umbrella House, the Dorothy Reister House at Stone Quarry Art Park, the Wharton Esherick Museum, and the Modulightor Building - the only Paul Rudolph-designed interior open to the public in New York City.

Join or renew your membership today to take advantage of the Explore Modern Partnership.
