Docomomo US is pleased to welcome the Liljestrand House to the Explore Modern Partnership.

If you are lucky enough to live in or to be visiting Hawaii any time soon, please add the impeccably preserved Liljestrand House to your bucket list while you are there. Sited atop Mount Tantalus in Honolulu, this single-family home, completed in 1952, is considered one of the masterworks of architect Vladimir Ossipoff. The Liljestrand family remained lifelong friends with Ossipoff and no changes were ever made to the structure or interior elements of the house, including furnishings and artwork, without consulting him. Ossipoff designed the house to showcase the 270-degree view of Honolulu and the natural beauty of the surrounding forest was an important element incorporated into the design. Those who joined us at the 2019 National Symposium were treated to a tour of the home and can attest to its stunning beauty. 

The Liljestrand Foundation was created by the Liljestrand family in 2007 with the vision of preserving the house, its site, and archives, and making that preservation beneficial to the global community. Preservation of the house is made possible through donations and public tour and program revenues.
