Upper Nine Squares: Highlights of Yale's Most Iconic Modernist Architecture (Friday)

The “Upper Nine Squares” tour takes place in the heart of downtown New Haven and on the Yale campus. Consider this your Modern Architecture 101 course, with a spotlight on several of New Haven's most iconic modernist buildings. This tour will provide an overview of the history, architecture, and architects of these significant structures, and it will take you on exclusive interior tours at several of the buildings.


Buildings on this tour include Yale’s Art and Architecture building (Paul Rudolph), Yale University Art Gallery (Louis Kahn), Yale Center for British Art (Louis Kahn), Yale’s Morse and Stiles Colleges* (Eero Saarinen), Beinecke Library (Gordon Bunshaft, SOM), and Manuscript Society (King-lui Wu).  


Tour Guide: The tour will be led by Ming Thompson, AIA, IIDA, NOMA; Critic, Yale School of Architecture; Principal, Atelier Cho Thompson; and New Haven Preservation Trust board member.

Thursday, June 22nd from 5-7pm

Friday, June 23rd from 2-4pm

 

*Note: Morse and Stiles Colleges will be undergoing work in June. The group will attempt to view the surrounding plazas if possible.
