Join New Haven Preservation Trust for a lecture on the complexities and contradictions at Modernism’s foremost art school. Dietrich Neumann will survey the celebrations of the Bauhaus centenary in Germany and will examine the school’s history as well as its continuing influence. Although its three directors—Walter Gropius, Hannes Meyer, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—were all architects, the school’s impact on the built environment pales in comparison with its role in the fields of design and education.

Born in Goettingen German, Dietrich Neumann, Ph.D., teaches the history of art and architecture at Brown University, where he directs the program in Urban Studies. To celebrate the centennial of the Bauhaus in October, he will co-lead an architectural tour of the three major Bauhaus cities in Germany: Dessau, Berlin, and Weimar.

Lecture made possible through the valued support of Martha and Jim Alexander, The Blake Hotel, and the Herzan Lecture Fund.
