Join Modernism Week for an exciting Fall Preview in Palm Springs over the Columbus Day holiday weekend (October 10-13, 2014). Highlights during the four-day schedule include a festive opening night poolside beach party and outdoor movie, a sneak peak of the Palm Springs Art Museum’s soon-to-open Architecture & Design museum, the first fall edition of the annual Modernism Show & Sale, exclusive tours of Frey House II and Steel House #1, architectural walking and bike tours, Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tours, a cocktail reception showcasing photographs of the Salton Sea, the Modernism Yard Sale, and the popular “Lost, Saved and Endangered” lecture and tour.
This eventful weekend begins with “Aloha, Modernism Week: A Modern Beach Party with a Twist of Elvis,” as Modernism Week kicks off its Fall Preview with a poolside beach party fit for “The King.” You’ll be transported to 1960s Waikiki to enjoy signature cocktails and delectable hors d’oeuvres at Hacienda Cantina & Beach Club, an exciting new venue with an intimate pool scene with an outdoor terrace, bar, fire pits, and expansive lawn area. A free screening of the 1961 Elvis Presley movie “Blue Hawaii” will provide a perfect setting under the stars.
The Modernism Show & Sale-Fall Edition at the Palm Springs Convention Center will feature 45 premier national and international dealers offering furniture, decorative and fine arts representing all design movements of the 20th century. The show opens Saturday, October 11 at 10 am with an exclusive “early bird” shopping preview until noon benefiting Modernism Week ($25 admission includes return entry all weekend). Saturday night, October 11 from 6-8 p.m. join the Palm Springs Art Museum for ¡Bienvenidos Modernistas! Celebrate Barcelona Modern-style in the newly-renovated Architecture and Design Center. This 13,000 square foot building, designed by renowned architect E. Stewart Williams in 1961 in a classic mid-century international style, is designated a Class I Historic Site. Party guests will be the first to access the building’s beautifully Modern interior, prior to the installation of its inaugural exhibition in November.
