Attendance is complimentary with museum admission or membership.
Docomomo US Board Member, Michelangelo Sabatino will host a discussion on the architectural history of modernist houses realized in Chicago and its suburbs during the Twentieth Century. Sabatino's lecture precedes his upcoming co-authored book "Modern in the Middle: Residential Architecture in Chicago & Suburbs, 1929–1975". By bringing in dialogue two complementary yet distinctive strands of modernity – organicisim and rationalism, co-authors Susan Benjamin and Michelangelo Sabatino explore the substantial yet overlooked role that Chicago-based architects played in the development of twentieth-century domesticity in Chicago, America and beyond.
The program will promote an in-depth analysis of these modern domestic structures, and is being held as part of a series centered around the recent restoration of the McCormick House, a property of the museum and one of only three single-family homes built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Since the restoration, the building’s full exterior is now visible for the first time in nearly 25 years.
