Hyde Park: Object Buildings and Urban Renewal

Image details

In the late 1950s, Hyde Park underwent a radical transformation as the University of Chicago reshaped the neighborhood through a massive urban renewal project. At the same time, the university began its own transformation, expanding beyond its Gothic quadrangles and commissioning buildings by significant modernist architects.

This tour explores the legacy of urban renewal through visits to a pair of midrise towers designed by I.M. Pei and blocks of rowhouses designed by Harry Weese. Other tour highlights include university buildings designed by Eero Saarinen, Mies van der Rohe, Edward Durrell Stone, Ike Colburn, and Walter Netsch.

This tour starts and ends at IIT Crown Hall.
