Selby Public Library

Site overview

Designed in 1976 by Walter Netsch of Skidmore Owings and Merrill, the Selby Public Library was positioned to be compatible with the neighboring Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall and Hyatt Hotel. The trapezoidal shapes of the building suggest the look of sails, blending with the boats in Sarasota Bay. The library moved to a larger building on First Street in 1998. G.WIZ remodeled the building and opened at this site in 2000.

Current Condition

When the library moved to a new building in 1988, the building was rennovated for the use of the Gulfcoast Wonder and Imagination Zone (GWIZ) and has remained empty since its closure in 2014. This building is part of a very large city-owned site that is now being considered for development, the masterplan design of which is being carried out by Sasaki Associates.
