Renaissance Center

Site overview

Under the sponsorship of Henry Ford II and others, Detroit underwent an ambitious redevelopment program in the 1960s and 1970s. Architect John Portman, Jr.’s Renaissance Center is a highly successful complex of five reflective glass and steel towers set on a raised podium. Shops, theaters, restaurants, offices, and the 73-story Detroit Plaza Hotel (later to come the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center), define the city’s waterfront skyline. In 2016, General Motors Co. (the Center’s owner) announced plans for a large-scale renovation of the buildings to include interior updates to the central area, and conversion of select exterior areas to allow for programmable space which can be used to support rotating vehicle displays and showcases of current GM products.
