FIVE (MORE) REASONS TO ATTEND THE 2019 DOCOMOMO US SYMPOSIUM IN HAWAII

We have already given you five reasons to revisit Hawaii in its heyday this September, but in case that was not enough, here are five more we hope will entice you.

1. Honored Special Guest Alexandra Lange

Alexandra Lange, architecture critic for Curbed, will be joining us. Her work has appeared in numerous design publications including Architect, Harvard Design Magazine, Metropolis, and T Magazine, as well as in New York Magazine, the New Yorker, and the New York Times. She has been a featured writer at Design Observer and an Opinion columnist at Dezeen. Her most recent book is The Design of Childhood: How the Material World Shapes Independent Kids. 2. Early Registration ends August 5th

Technically this is more of a reason not to delay rather than a reason to join us, but an important reminder nonetheless. Starting on August 5th, registration rates will increase from $295 to $345. Another reason not to delay - tours are filling up fast. Sign up for one of them with the money you saved from registering early. 

3. The Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club

The original midcentury boutique hotel has established itself as one of Waikiki’s most sought after experiences for art, music and cultural events. This design-centric outpost quickly built a following among locals and visitors alike for its iconic “Wish you were here!” pool, boutique coffee bar Olive & Oliver and acclaimed Oahu born Chef Ed Kenney’s restaurant, Mahina & Sun’s. The Surfjack is the preferred hotel of the symposium and is offering special perks to guests who book with them.

4. Meet rising professionals in the field 

This year, two travel grants were made available to students and emerging professionals with an interest in studying the Modern Movement. We are pleased to announce the recipients are Elizabeth Munyan and Jeremy Ebersole. Thank you to the Docomomo US/Northern California chapter and Mills+Schnoering Architects for offering these opportunities.

5. Cocktail Club 🍸

Each location will feature a specialty cocktail designed exclusively for the symposium, so whether you’re feeling Don Draper vibes or just dig a good stiff drink, these swell little spots will help you celebrate the days of yesteryear.
