Schweikher House will offer a selection of in-depth specialty tours that will focus on the travels of Paul Schweikher and Martyl Langsdorf and how their experiences influenced their work as architect and artist respectively.

The Alden B. Dow Home and Studio and Mid-Century Modern Midland (MCMM) will participate in Docomomo US Tour Day on October 9, 2021. The Home and Studio will feature in-person tours of the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio and walking tours of the Dow Family Homes as well as structures representing Mr. Dow’s early career. MCMM will offer walking tours that highlight the 39 residential structures designed by Midland’s leading MCM architects in the Applewood and Valley Drive neighborhood. 

For this year’s Tour Day, Docomomo US/Chicago is teaming up with Forgotten Chicago for a walking tour of Peterson Avenue. The street is lined with small postwar commercial buildings that sprang up when Peterson Avenue was one of the major highways leading into the city. With their zigzag rooflines, staggered facades, and 1960s flair, this group of tiny modernist gems brings a touch of Southern California car culture to the northwest side of Chicago. The tour will include the former Lincoln Inn Motel from 1962 as well as one of Chicago’s most iconic neon restaurant signs.
