Cape Cod Modern Weekend

From the 1930s to the 1970s, modernist architecture thrived in New England. Despite economic problems and a conservative culture, the region fostered the practices of Bauhaus refugees and their students. Join Docomomo US for a two and a half day excursion examining the experimental weekend houses they designed for themselves and clients on Cape Cod.

 

Cape Cod Modern Weekend tour will be lead by Peter McMahon, the Founding Director of the Cape Cod Modern House Trust whose mission is to archive, restore and celebrate the Outer Cape’s outstanding modern architecture and the creative culture that surrounded it. He is co-author, along with Christine Cipriani, of Cape Cod Modern. Mid-Century Architecture and Community on the Outer Cape, (2014, Metropolis Books) winner of the Historic New England Book Prize, 2015.

SCHEDULE

 

Friday, October 6th

Guests will meet after lunch for an afternoon excursion. We will conclude the day with a wine and cheese reception. Dinner is on your own.

Saturday, October 7th

We will meet as a group bright and early and set off for our morning house visits. A boxed lunch will be provided and we will continue with an afternoon tour. Dinner is on your own.

Sunday, October 8th

Guests will gather in the morning for our last day of house visits. A boxed lunch will be provided and we will conclude with an afternoon tour. Dinner is on your own.

HOUSES AND SITES

The two and a half day tour to the Cape will include a number of house visits including but not limited to:

 

Cape Cod Modern House Trust sites:

- Kugel/Kips House by Charlie Zehnder from 1970

- Hatch Cottage by Jack Hall from 1960

- Weidlinger House by Paul Weidlinger and built in 1953

- Kohlberg House by Luther Crowell from 1960

 

Additional houses and sites:

- Chermayeff House and Studio from 1944-1960s

- Breuer Cottage (his final resting place) from 1949/62/67

- Lechay House designed by Hayden Walling from 1959

- Kepes House by Marcel Breuer from 1949

- Brodeur House design by Charlie Zehnder in 1977

- Mark House designed by Paul Krueger in 1966

- Mushroom House by Donald Jasinski from 1953

- Chapel of St. James the Fisherman designed by Olav Hammarstrom in 1957

 

The final list of sites will be provided one month prior to the trip.

 

LOGISTICS

 

Accommodations

There are a variety of excellent accommodation on the Cape for guests to choose and participate in the tour. Docomomo US recommends Endless Coast in Wellfleet for its proximity and reasonable accommodation. https://www.endlesscoast.com/ 

Starting point

Each day guests will meet at the Dunkin coffee shop (link opens Google maps) in the center of Wellfleet. Address: 2393 State Hwy Rte 6, Wellfleet, MA 02667

Car Pooling

Guests are expected to car pool each day to minimize the number of vehicles at each site. Cars with high ground clearance will be prioritized.

Member per person - $800.00

Non-member - $1000.00

Comprehensive educational land program as detailed.

 

Entrance to all locations and sites as detailed. Each participating household will receive a complimentary copy of Cape Cod Modern signed by Peter McMahon. A welcome reception on Friday evening and a boxed lunch on Saturday and Sunday will be provided. It is anticipated that AIA credits will be available.

 

Rate does not include

Accommodations in Cape Cod. Breakfast, lunch or dinner where not described. Transportation to and from Cape Cod. Drinks and meals other than those specifically included.

 

We will be visiting many of Cape Cod’s most important and rarely seen modern homes. Due to the small dirt roads on the Cape, this will be a caravan (car-pooling) type tour. Details regarding driving and car-pooling will be collected and organized prior to the trip.

 

Note that all schedules and program details are given in good faith based on information available at the time. Circumstances might arise which prevent us from operating a tour exactly as advertised. The itinerary, accommodations, and arrangements are subject to change, with or without notice, at the discretion of Docomomo US.

 

Cancellation Policy

Docomomo US reserves the right to cancel this event at any time if we feel that it cannot be held safely, for any reason including but not limited to current COVID-19 health metrics and guidance. In this case, Docomomo US would refund participants the cost of their registration, but will not be responsible for any other costs incurred as a result of our decision to cancel the event.

 

Registrants may cancel through July 31 for a full refund. Cancellations after August 1 will not receive a refund. Email info@docomomo-us.org to cancel your registration.

 

Attendees may wish to consider purchasing travel insurance, which may reimburse certain costs in the event that the event is canceled or you are unable to participate. Docomomo US does not recommend any specific insurer or insurance product, and is not able to provide guidance.
