2020 Modernism in America Awards Ceremony

Now in its seventh year, the Modernism in America Awards celebrate the documentation, preservation and re-use of modern buildings, structures and landscapes built in the United States or on U.S. territory. The Awards recognize those building owners, design teams, advocacy and preservation organizations that have made significant efforts to retain, restore and advocate for the aesthetic and cultural value of such places.

The recipients of the 2020 Modernism in America Awards highlight the best in preservation practice by today’s architects, designers, and preservation professionals, for modern sites, landscapes and beyond. 

For the first time ever, the Awards Ceremony will be offered as a free, virtual event (advance registration required). The eighteen award winners will be announced during the live ceremony.

Buffalo's Willert Park Courts to receive Modernism in America Advocacy Award

Willert Park Courts, the first housing complex for African Americans in Buffalo and an early example of International Style design, will receive the Docomomo US 2020 Modernism in America Advocacy Award of Excellence. The organization's top advocacy prize honors the work of Preservation Buffalo Niagara (PBN) and the Michigan Street Preservation Corporation (MSPC) who for over 15 years maintained their stance that the complex is “one of the single most historic places in the City of Buffalo.”
