Perched on top of a steep road overlooking Long Island Sound, are two rare houses designed by Tony Smith best known for his abstract sculptures created in the 1960s and 1970s before his move away from architecture. These angular steel-framed homes sit on pilotis on a cliff at the water’s edge. The first home built for Fred Olsen Sr. is composed of a series of interconnected rectangular volumes and ramps, while the more modest home for Fred Olsen Jr. is a u-shaped plan that dramatically opens to the water.

For 58 years, the office of Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates was located at 20 Davis Street in Hamden, Connecticut. With the passing of Kevin Roche in 2019, the office moved to Erector Square and continues as Roche Modern, LLC under the direction of partners Eamon Roche and Jerry Boryca. Guests will learn about the unique design process that was begun by Eero Saarinen, see many of the architectural study models for projects completed by Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates from 1961 to 2019, as well as Eero’s desk and chair, cartoons of the Saarinen office drawn by Claude de Forest and a few other archival treasures from the collection. After our visit to the offices, guests will be treated to an in depth tour of the David S. Ingalls Rink (aka the Yale Whale) designed by Eero Saarinen (1953-58) with an addition by KRJDA (2007-09) given by Wes Kavanagh, who was a Principal at KRJDA and the project architect for the Whale addition.

Many modernist gems are located just outside of New Haven in North Haven and Hamden. This bus tour will take you on an exploration of modernism through a variety of residential, religious, and community buildings.

Fueled by returning WWII veterans, a burst of postwar residential development spread into the farmland and rural areas adjacent to cities. During this period, our tour's four remarkable mid-century houses were constructed. Two were designed by Vincent Amore and one by Carl Blanchard, both local architects. The last was designed by the legendary Marcel Breuer.

New Haven’s most affluent neighborhood, Prospect Hill is not only a treasure trove of grand early twentieth-century homes, but also a range of important mid-century modern residences. Focusing on these domestic structures, this walking tour will include the house of Ed Logue (1955), the visionary development administrator of the New Haven Redevelopment Agency, the work of husband-wife duo Carlton and Diana Granbery, and a range of experimental buildings designed by local architects for their own families, including those of Frank Winder (1962), William deCossy (1972), Howard Lathrop (1973), Gene Festa (1974), King-lui Wu (1978), Peter Tagiuri (1986), and Turner Brooks (2000).

Join Docomomo US, the national modern preservation organization, as we take to the sidewalks of New Haven to discover buildings from the city's past and present. Learn to read a building using the language of architecture and capture your favorite details, patterns and textures along the way. This walking tour will begin and end at the International Festival of Arts & Ideas tent and will take about an hour. The program is recommended for children ages 6 to 12 to be accompanied by their parents or guardians.

Encouraged by new highways and supportive mortgage policies, Connecticut suburbs flourished after World War II, offering a fertile field for Modernist architecture.
