Docomomo US Staff

As we head into the new year, Docomomo US is excited to build upon the positive developments that took place during 2016. However, there is still much at stake as we face an unknown political environment that could jeopardize long and hard fought preservation efforts. See what is taking place in 2017

Advocacy

Docomomo US along with our chapters and partners led a number of remarkable advocacy victories last year. But there are still looming threats facing modern buildings, sites, and landscapes across the country. Los Angeles' Parker Center, Milwaukee’s Mitchell Park Domes, Washington DC's Pershing Park, Minneapolis' Peavey Plaza, and New York's Ambassador Gill are still threatened with demolition or redevelopment despite tireless and sometimes years of advocacy and effort. Docomomo US in addition to our chapters, friend organizations, partners will remain viligent and continue to monitor and speak out.

National Symposium

Join us as we travel southwest to Phoenix, Arizona for the Fifth Annual Docomomo US National Symposium March 29th through April 2nd, 2017, in collaboration with Modern Phoenix Week. The 2017 Symposium Modernism and Climate offers both lectures and tours that examine how modern design approached desert climates creatively and how those design strategies continue to be relevant in light of our search for sustainable solutions and what we can learn from those creative efforts.

Unique to the 2017 Symposium is a full-day retreat to Arcosanti. This “urban laboratory” located in the desert north of Phoenix was the vision of Paolo Soleri, who was once a Frank Lloyd Wright fellow. Co-president Jeff Stein and others will lead guests thorough tours, lectures and discussions exploring the legacy and future of this experimental, utopian town and land preserve, what it is like to live and work at Arcosanti and what the vision is for the site in the future.

Modernism in America Awards

Docomomo US is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Modernism in America Awards. The awards celebrate the documentation, preservation and re-use of modern buildings, structures and landscapes built in the United States or on U.S. territory by recognizing the building owners, design teams, advocacy and preservation organizations that have made significant efforts to retain, restore and advocate for the aesthetic and cultural value of such places.

Early nominations are due March 1, 2017, and all nominations must be submitted by April 14, 2017
