Spring Conference: Roots of Modernism
Boston, MA | May 28 - 31, 2009

Boston: A city of undeniable heritage, where Modern design found its American roots in places such as the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the MIT School of Architecture + Planning. Where better to debate the Modern Movement’s early successes and failures, consider its impact on contemporary design, and discuss its uncertain future?

Many mid-century examples of Modern architecture are threatened with demolition, including the iconic Boston City Hall. Between discussions, you’ll tour the works of some of the world’s earliest Modern masters as well as contemporary design leaders—a pantheon including Gropius, Sert, Corbusier, Aalto, Saarinen, Holl, Gehry, Pei, Polshek, Behnisch, Foster, KMW, and Diller/Scofidio/Renfro.

The COD Spring conference gives attendees a chance to visit early modern work in the Boston area and a number of exciting new works, too. This conference includes thoughtful presentations on the origins and implications of modernism in America and the AIA/COD annual meeting where the all attendees select COD candidates for AIA national honor awards. Attendees can also participate in the annual COD Member Slide Show where everyone has an opportunity to show examples of their current work. See the Leadership Web page to find contact for each project.
