The 1950s Washington Square Southeast urban renewal project—a reduced version of an earlier, broader Washington Square South plan—cleared nine blocks of Greenwich Village to create three "superblocks." One was designated for New York University expansion, the others for housing. All now belong to the University. The tour will view the built results including work by Philip Johnson, I. M. Pei and Hideo Sasaki and discuss their subsequent evolution.
The tour will be led by Kyle Johnson, AIA, Board Member, Docomomo US/New York Tri-State. It will last 1.5–2 hours.
The Washington Square Southeast Urban Renewal tour is being offered in conjunction with a tour of urban renewal at Lincoln Center on Saturday, October 28 by the New York Tri-State chapter. Together, these two tours offer the opportunity to spend a weekend exploring urban renewal in Manhattan.
