Activism in the Face of Modernity and Urban Renewal


In this session, speakers will discuss environmental and design activism by Lady Bird Johnson, Noel Phyllis Birkby and Annette and Rudi Rada. While each worked in their own lens of landscape, architecture and photography, these sessions will highlight the lens by which these notable activists worked to bring truth and harmony to communities impacted by midcentury pressures.

    May Khalife is a Ph.D. candidate in the History, Theory, Criticism of Architecture program in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati.
  • The Architectural Photography of Annette and Rudi Rada Tourism & Peril in mid-Twentieth Century Florida
    Victor Deupi, Ph.D., is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Miami School of Architecture where he teaches history and theory, design, and representation.
