Join us for an urban exploration of Miami’s heart. Miami’s incredible building stock, stretching from the 1920’s building boom through to the present day is on full display with special attention paid to Postmodern works of Arquitectonica, Philip Johnson, Claes Oldenburg, Edward Durell Stone, and others.

In the first half of this tour, particpants will explore the typology and architecture of the hotel rows and residential quarters of South Beach, interpreted as a Mediterranean Deco-Modern “alphabet city.” From the concert hall and rooftop garden of Frank Gehry’s New World Symphony, the second portion of the tour follows the pedestrian ribbon of Lincoln Road all the way to the tropical-brutalist finale of the 1111 parking garage by Herzog & deMeuron. Along the road, we will discuss the works of Morris Lapidus, Lawrence Murray Dixon, Igor Polevitzky’s Albion Hotel, West 8’s Soundscape park at Collins Avenue, etc.

Participants will walk at least four of the most-intact Parker homes still standing, including what was once Miami-Dade County's largest waterfront property (the 1951 Caudle Residence) and an active construction site (the 1951 Baros Residence) to see an on-going restoration efforts. 

Despite being a city best known for its Art Deco architecture, Miami Beach is home to an incredible collection of postwar Modern buildings and structures. North Beach has one of the largest and most cohesive concentrations of Miami Modern (MiMo) buildings, nearly 700, in South Florida. They include landmark hotels, commercial buildings, and garden-style apartment buildings. North Beach neighborhoods also incorporate other architectural styles, including Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco, and Moderne – all blending together to give a distinctively urban character to this northern part of Miami Beach.
