Alfred Browning Parker: Inside the Homes of Miami's Regional Modernist (Fri)

South Florida is home to a distinct form of local modernism pioneered by Architect Alfred Browning Parker. Establishing his practice in the 1940s, Parker gained international attention by incorporating South Florida's unique geology into Modernist architecture and, at times, through the hands of his own personal craftsmanship. Participants will walk at least four of the most-intact Parker homes still standing, including what was once Miami-Dade County's largest waterfront property (the 1951 Caudle Residence) and an active construction site (the 1951 Baros Residence) to see an on-going restoration efforts. During the tour, participants will learn first-hand how local geologic material had been implemented into South Florida’s stringent building standards throughout the midcentury. 

This tour will view Alfred Browning Parker's Woodsong from the exterior. A special Thursday evening event will include a tour of the interior and a reception. 
 
The tour will be led by William Hamilton Arthur IV, AIA, NCARB, a third-generation architect in the city of Coral Gables and Principal Architect of WHAA.

How to register

To register or be added to the waitlist for a tour, you must first register for the Symposium. Once you register for the Symposium, you will receive an email with the subject "Register for your Miami tours," which will have links to register for the individual tours.

For tours that are sold out, continue filling out the tour registration and you will be added to the waitlist. If a spot opens up, Docomomo US staff will contact you to finalize your registration. 

All remaining tour spots will open to the general public on May 1.

All tours will be submitted for AIA credits. 

Tour Leader

William H. Arthur IV, AIA, NCARB

William H. Arthur IV, AIA, NCARB is a third-generation architect in the city of Coral Gables, with an academic background in Urban and Regional Planning, Historic Preservation and Latin American Studies. William’s certificate in Historic Preservation was earned under the guidance of former State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) and former Associate Director for Cultural Resources of the National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Department of Interior in Washington, D.C., Janet Mathews, Ph.D. William has been involved with more than 1,200 construction projects, including more than 100 in the City of Coral Gables within the last six years. William has sought to design from a perspective that is both culturally-sensitive and historically-minded. William has a personal heritage in the City of Coral Gables, since his grandfather’s working in the city since 1949 with midcentury Architect, Igor B. Polevitzky, FAIA, and William’s own work with Alfred Browning Parker’s son, Robin Parker. Finding merit not only in the constructions that he studied, but also their impact on the people who utilize them, William developed a sense of obligation to the city and the unique fabric of architecture that formed it.
