Founded in 2009, the Minnesota Chapter of Docomomo US advocates for the exploration, documentation, conservation, and sustained use of Minnesota’s manifestations of the Modern Movement and strives to strengthen public interest and understanding of these works. Minnesota is home to a diverse range of Modernist architecture and landscape architecture including neighborhoods, parks, residences, churches, commercial buildings, and tourist attractions.
Documentation
Docomomo US MN is committed to cataloging Minnesota’s buildings, sites, and neighborhoods of the Modern movement. View the sites that have been documented so far on the MN Modern Registry.
Programs
Docomomo US MN holds several annual events for its members and the public throughout the year including a spring Mod Mixer, a fall tour day, and a winter movie screening. We also host “Going, Going, Gone” tours highlighting unique or at-risk Modern properties located in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. Other educational programs offered include exhibits and lectures in partnership with other preservation and architecture organizations.
Advocacy
Docomomo US MN advocates for the conservation and reuse of Modern properties within the state of Minnesota. Our efforts include serving as a watchdog for threatened sites, providing written and oral testimonials to building owners and local governments, and supporting other regional non-profit preservation organizations in their advocacy efforts.
