A Residential Design Citation of Merit is given to the De Jonghe Residence, a late residential work by Lloyd Wright. Built into a dramatic Hollywood Hills site, the house embodies his commitment to the integration of architecture and landscape. Architect and midcentury specialist John Powell, who owned the home for many years, had stewarded it through a previous thoughtful renovation. After a pipe burst, flooding portions of the house in 2024, the current owners began the sensitive restoration work and to optimize the house for use as a gathering space and a sanctuary. Before the intervention could begin, all original elements were catalogued and Wright’s original drawings, recovered through archival research at UCLA Library Special Collections, were studied. Original materials including flagstone from a now-closed quarry, distinctive board-formed concrete, and finely crafted interior woodwork, were carefully researched, sourced, and replicated to maintain continuity with Wright’s original design vocabulary. New elements such as custom cabinetry, doors, windows, built-in furnishings, and a stained-glass panel, complement the architecture without competing with it. A vehicle-dominated rear yard was transformed into a drought-tolerant pool garden, reinforcing the connecting between the house and its hillside setting.
