Miami is a city whose location, diversity and vibrant growth have made it an ideal destination for international travel, business, culture, and leisure. Incorporated in 1896 – though Native Americans inhabited the region for millennia – the city and its greater region are a remarkable landscape described by native Amerindians as a slowly flowing “river of grass,” with a thin strip of buildable land stretching along its coastline. The region became an escape for post-World War II middle America, shaped largely by the desire for leisure and entertainment. Over the past decades, Miami has become a laboratory to explore new urban patterns, building types, evolving aesthetics, and emerging environmental consciousness.

Venues

Symposium Registration/Check-In and Sessions will be held at the buildings comprising the University of Miami School of Architecture (UMSoA). On Wednesday, May 29, Art Conservator, Writer, and Curator Rosa Lowinger opens the Symposium with her keynote address “Modern Materials, Tropical Identities: Preservation as a Tool for Personal and Communal Repair.” It will take place at the midcentury Cosford Cinema on campus; the opening reception will follow at Lowe Art Museum (UM).

This year, we’re flip-flopping sessions and tours, to offset high temps in the afternoon. Thursday and Friday tours will be held in the morning, with buses picking up from the Mayfair House Hotel. Sessions will take place in the afternoon at UMSoA’s Stanley and Jewell Glasgow Lecture Hall, Irvin Korach Gallery, and Murphy Design Studio. Friday's closing keynote “Challenges of Modernity and their Impact on Modern Movement” by Docomomo International Chair Uta Pottgiesser will be held on the UM campus, followed by the closing reception at The Wolfsonian. On Saturday, buses will pick up from Coconut Grove for a full day of tours. The VIP Party follows on Saturday evening.

Getting Around

The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Center has compiled a list of the top free apps to help you travel in Miami including from rideshare to public transit, parking and general exploration, even food delivery. Once you’ve booked your tours and sessions, we recommend familiarizing yourself with these handy mobile apps to make travel a breeze. All of these apps are free to download, though some offer or require in-app purchases to use the service.

PLEASE NOTE: Transportation to and from The University of Miami (UM) and other events is not provided unless you are on a bus tour. Bus tours will depart from the Mayfair House Hotel & Garden and end at UM.

The Mayfair House Hotel & Garden

The Mayfair House Hotel & Garden is the preferred hotel of the Symposium and attendees enjoy a special discounted rate.

Mayfair House Hotel & Garden, an icon of Coconut Grove that first opened in 1985, reopened September 2022. Embracing original architect Kenneth Treister’s signature work of art that has transcended time, the hotel was lovingly transformed by New York-based studio Goodrich.
