The South Side at Midcentury

Image details

Chicago’s modernist skyscrapers are known and celebrated throughout the world. But the city’s South Side has a wealth of modernist architecture—homes, banks, institutional buildings and more—that are worthy of notice...and protection.

On this tour, we’ll explore the South Side’s modernist buildings, including a radical elementary school by Perkins & Will; a unique 1960s bank on historic Martin Luther King Drive; a Hyde Park house designed by Marina City architect Bertrand Goldberg, and a Space Age dry cleaners in the Chatham community. Along the way, we’ll learn about the South Side’s development and history.

This tour starts and ends at the UIC Academic and Residential Complex.
