Docomomo US TOUR DAY 2011: CALIFORNIA

Tour Foothill College Architecture Tour

Los Alto, CA

  Docomomo US/NoCa
The Northern California Chapter of the Society for Architectural Historians
Date/Time Saturday October 8, 2011

Designed in 1958 by San Francisco Architect Ernest Kump, working with Marsten and Hurd, Foothill College is an architectural landmark for its buildings, its landscape, and its innovative approach to campus design. Lauded by San Francisco Chronicle architectural critic Allan Temko as the “acropolis of the west” when it first opened, its design influenced the community college movement across the country. Kump was well known for bringing Modernist design principles to educational facilities, but the design of the Foothill college buildings was a departure even for him. The buildings combine a Second Bay region sensibility with a slightly Japanese styling. The beautiful landscape design by Sasaki Walker unifies the campus and applies the California concept of indoor/outdoor living to a college setting. Undulating landforms, curving paths, informal planting arrangements, and the integration of sculpture--all hallmarks of Northern California’s best modern landscape design--are in play at Foothill College.
