National Symposium

Docomomo US National Symposium

The Docomomo US National Symposium is the primary event in the United States for those interested in the preservation of modern architecture to gather, discuss, share and explore the preservation of heritage of the second half of the 20th Century and its legacy and importance today. The Symposium developed as a result of the Docomomo US Board of Directors’ annual “Face to Face” meeting. The first expanded event took place in Los Angeles in 2010 with an open forum for local individuals actively engaged in the discussion of modern architecture. Docomomo US hosted its first National Symposium in Sarasota, Florida in April 2013. Held annually, this multi-day conference seeks to engage local participants in cities across the United States, offering participants the ability to interact with and explore a wide variety of significant modern architecture and sites.

National Symposium Objectives:

  • To promote the value of modern architecture and to highlight its significance and attributes
  • To provide a forum whereby participants can share their knowledge and experience in an effort to promote collaboration and best practices
  • To bring together the Docomomo US Board of Directors, its chapters and friend organizations, national and local partner organizations as well as the general membership and local community

Docomomo US National Symposium 2015: Modernism on the Prairie

In 2015, Docomomo US and Docomomo US/Minnesota will launch the third annual Docomomo US National Symposium entitled Modernism on the Prairie: Rural to Metro Regional Interpretations of the Modern Movement. The three-and-a-half-day symposium seeks to celebrate and bring national attention to the unique cultural heritage, preservation and advocacy of significant modern architecture throughout the state of Minnesota. The symposium will include a multifaceted schedule of events featuring a panel discussion by leading minds in the fields of architecture and preservation on the regional interpretations of modernism in Minnesota and the greater Midwest, as well as peer reviewed presentations on the current issues facing modern architecture and cultural heritage preservation. Exclusive tours and networking events will highlight exceptional examples of modernism in the greater Minneapolis/St. Paul area as well as those sites that may be endangered. As the only national event working to explore and build consensus on the preservation of modern architecture, the symposium will bring together world renowned designers, scholars, students and professionals from the state of Minnesota and from around the country.
