URGENT: Help Prevent Oil Drilling Near Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty

Robert Smithson's monumental earthwork Spiral Jetty (1970) is located on the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Using black basalt rocks and earth from the site, the artist created a coil 1500 feet long and 15 feet wide that stretches out counterclockwise into the translucent red water. Spiral Jetty was acquired by Dia Art Foundation as a gift from the Estate of the artist in 1999.

Preservation Alert Update: Impressive Modern Building Available for Adaptive Use

Building 521 - Gunner's Mate School at Great Lakes Naval Station in North Chicago, Illinois is threatened with demolition. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and completed in 1954, this amazing Bruce Graham-designed building has been unused for years.

The Navy is moving forward with plans to demolish this building. However, the Navy is open to an outside entity/contractor using the building or to disassembling and moving the building off the base.

 

The Navy is accepting proposals for re-use of the building through Wednesday, February 13, 2008.

On Tuesday, January 29, 2008 the U.S. Dept. of the Navy will hold a public meeting to explore alternative uses for this structure. The Navy is open to an outside entity/contractor using the building or to disassembling and moving the building off the base. The meeting will take place from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Visitor Center at Great Lakes Naval Station Farragut Avenue, Great Lakes, lllinois, phone: (847) 688-5648.

Symposium At Cummer To Honor Mid-Century Modern Architects And Architecture on January 15, 2008

Jacksonville, Florida, January 15, 2008.

The Jacksonville Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and DOCOMOMO Florida are sponsoring a one-day symposium highlighting the achievements of architecture's Modern Movement in Northeast Florida.

The event will be held at the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens (829 Riverside Ave., Jacksonville) on March 1, 2008. A morning session with presentations by North Florida's most well-know architects and by nationally recognized architectural scholars will begin at 10:30 a.m. and last until 12:45 p.m.

Organized by the Faculty of Architecture of Delft University of Technology and Jo Coene of MIT, the workshop will focus on case studies in Rotterdam selected out of the period from 1940-1958 that have recently been selected by the National Service for Archeology, Cultural landscape and Built Heritage (RACM) to be listed as built cultural heritage.
