DOCOMOMO US is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dorothy Miner on October 21, 2008.
Dorothy served as the counsel for the Landmarks Preservation Commission for two decades and played a critical role in the 1978 Penn Central case. After retiring from the Commission in 1994 she taught at Columbia ’s Historic Preservation program, Pace University School of Law, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where her dedication to her students was inspiring.
The future of the 28-year-old Marcel Breuer designed Central Library of the Atlanta-Fulton County Library System is in doubt due to a push by members of the Fulton County Commission to pursue construction of a new “world-class” library facility. In November, Fulton County voters will consider approval of a $275 million bond issue, which would allow partial funding for the new facility.
The City of Miami Historic Preservation and Environmental Board (HEPB) approved, by a 7-1 vote, the nomination of the Miami Marine Stadium for Historic Designation. The HEPB now will conduct and study to determine whether the structure should be designated. The study should take 2-4 months; then the Stadium will go back to the HEPB for approval.
Selected issues from John Entenza's Arts & Architecture Magazine (1945-1967), including the historic Case Study House Projects are now available on the internet. The A&A website is made possible by Benedikt Taschen and his eponymous publishing house, which is re-issuing the magazine in book form in the Fall of 2008.
The DOCOMOMO Turkey National Working Party has learned with great concern that Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality and Erciyes University plan to demolish some of existing parts of the Sümerbank Textile Factory Complex in Kayseri (Turkstoj, 1935) for a landscaping and land-development project.
The Sümerbank Complex was one of the earliest industrial production plants of the young Turkish Republic. It was not only intended for the development of the local and national economy but also as a part of the socio-political revolution aimed at nation-building and modernization.
