The Docomomo US young professional’s initiative, the Modern League, continues to grow and improve since its inception in September of 2012. Working with like-minded professionals in New York, Boston and now Florida, Docomomo US and Modern League organizers recap recent events and initiatives.
In the last few months, the Modern League has been keeping warm with the abundance of cultural events that take place indoors in New York. In January, the Modern League teamed up with the AIA’s Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) committee for a Modern vs modern trivia night. The questions tested the participant’s knowledge of Modernism and contemporary architecture with a grab bag round of 1990’s pop culture.

In February, the Modern League continued to capitalize on the city’s modern lectures and exhibits. Ruins of Modernity: Failure of Revolutionary Architecture in the Twentieth Century, hosted by New York Platypus, featured speakers Peter Eisenman, Reinhold Martin, Joan Ockman, and Bernard Tschumi on the nature of architecture and social revolution. The Modern League also ventured to The Museum of the City of New York’s to check out the exhibit Designing Tomorrow: America’s Worlds Fair’s of the 1930’s. No cultural event is complete without a thorough discussion and a glass of wine!

In order to promote the Docomomo US mission to the next generation of professionals and enthusiasts, the Modern League is focused on partnering with young people actively involved in Docomomo US chapters and growing in areas where a Docomomo chapter may not yet exist. The initiative’s first big step in this direction includes working with a number of people within the Docomomo US/New England chapter to hold Modern League events in Boston. While still in the development stage, updates from the Boston area are expected in the coming months.

With the Docomomo US National Symposium in Sarasota, Florida just around the corner, the Modern League is also planning to team up for a fun meet up during the event. Note that although the Modern League is focused on young professionals, our events are open to everyone who is young at heart and interested in bringing more young professionals into the efforts of Docomomo US nationally and locally. More information on the Modern League initiative can be found on our website or on our Facebook or Twitter pages.
