The seventh annual Docomomo US Tour Day event is just a few months away and as usual is filled with unique and exclusive events looking at important examples of modern architecture, sites, interiors and landscapes all across the country. While we won’t be announcing the full list of events until September, here is a sneak peek that will have you wishing you could be several places at once.

We welcome back our friend organization, Palm Springs Modernism Week, whose “Fall Season Kick-Off” will be a grand finale to Tour Day, occurring over the Columbus Day holiday weekend from October 11-14th.  Their schedule will include architectural tours, a retro “yard sale," a swanky cocktail party, and the Modernism Week Double Decker Bus Tours. With this effort Modernism Week celebrates its partnership with Docomomo US and the upcoming launch of our newest chapter, Docomomo US/Southern California (who will host their inaugural Tour Day event this year). Tickets for “Fall Season Kick Off go on sale August 1st.

It takes a lot to cover the great state of Texas during Tour Day, and in addition to our North Texas chapter and our friends at Houston Mod, our MidTexMod chapter has something special planned in Austin.  They will host a tour of a number of properties by prolific architect, John Sanders Chase (b. 1925), featuring the Phillips House, which he designed in 1964. The event will also include a panel discussion on John Chase's career in Austin and Houston, paired with an exhibit of drawings of his Austin-based commissions.

Returning from last year, we welcome the Historic Albany Foundation who will host a lecture by filmmakers Mary Paley and John Romeo, historical consultant, Pat Bulgaro and Albany City Historian, Tony Opalka as they discuss their in-progress documentary, “The Neighborhood That Disappeared,” telling the story of the vibrant Italian neighborhood that housed courageous immigrants and the Greatest Generation. Following the lecture, conservator Bill Brandow will lead a tour around the exterior of the striking Empire State Plaza that heralds the next wave of historic preservation and architectural appreciation.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, September 5th when all Tour Day events, including those mentioned here, will be announced on our website. Watch the Docomomo US Facebook and Twitter account for additional sneak peeks and details about activities in new partner cities within Pennsylvania, Indiana, Ohio, and Idaho.

For those who might have an idea for a Tour Day event, it’s not too late to become involved. New organizations and participants are welcome at any time, and we are here to help.
