"The Sarasota Architectural Foundation is pleased to announce SarasotaMOD Week[end], from October 9-12. This four-day architectural festival takes place in Sarasota, a culturally sophisticated community located on the gleaming Gulf of Mexico. The event includes lectures and presentations by leading modernist architects, including Lawrence Scarpa, Tim Seibert, and Carl Abbott. Presenters also include architect John Howey, author of The Sarasota School of Architecture: 1941-1966; and architect Joe King, the co-author of Paul Rudolph: The Florida Houses. Author, critic and filmmaker Alastair Gordon, journalist Harold Bubil, and Ringling College of Art+Design professor Christopher Wilson will also lend their insights. Guided bus, boat and walking tours will explore Sarasota’s mid-century legacy by land and sea. Many festival gatherings will take place in acclaimed modernist structures.

SarasotaMOD will launch just 18 months after the successful Docomomo US National Symposium that took place in Sarasota in 2013. Drawing more than 150 attendees from around the world, the symposium included an illuminating charrette that explored the possibility of holding a Sarasota Modern Week along the lines of the Palm Spring Modernism Week in Palm Springs, California. Community leaders and Docomomo representatives gathered for what amounted to an extended brainstorming session.

SAF’s board chair, Janet Minker notes that, “The workshop laid down the conceptual foundation for SarasotaMOD Week[end]. You can discuss the Sarasota School in the abstract all you want. But to really know it, you have to experience it—you have to be here. The Docomomo symposium participants were here, and they were thrilled with the experience. After the workshop, SAF decided, ‘We have to do this again.’”

The SarasotaMOD Weekend is October 9-12, 2014, in Sarasota, Florida and will include special tours in the context of Docomomo US’ National Tour Day on October 11. For more information about the festival and the respective Docomomo US Tours, please visit www.sarasotamod.com
