MoMA Symposium on Carribbean Modernist Architecture

The Museum of Modern Art and University of Technology, Jamaica to Present Symposium on Caribbean Modernist Architecture

Caribbean Modernist Architecture Symposium
Jamaica Conference Center, Kingston, Jamaica
February 28-March 2, 2008

The Museum of Modern Art’s International Program and Department of Architecture and Design are collaborating with the School of Architecture at the University of Technology, Jamaica, to present a symposium on the subject of Caribbean Modernist Architecture. The symposium and related activities will be held at the Jamaica Conference Center in Kingston, Jamaica from February 28 through March 2, 2008.

The symposium will offer two days of moderated talks, on February 29 and March 1, by practicing architects, architectural historians, and curators from thirteen countries—the Bahamas, Barbados, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Venezuela—who will discuss issues involving modernist architecture in the region. Topics to be addressed include regional and international legacies, preservation, environmental sustainability, and urban planning, as they relate to modernist architectural history and contemporary practice.

Following upon the work, The Modern Movement in the Caribbean Islands, published by DOCOMOMO in 2005, the symposium aims to encourage scholarly, curatorial, and broader educational awareness of modernist architecture in the Caribbean and to assess the lessons for contemporary practice from this architectural heritage. In addition, the symposium and related video documentation will provide useful research resources for future exhibitions and publications on the topic.

For full details on how to attend the symposium and registration rates please visit the University of Technology website here. Attendance is open to the general public and will be offered at a reduced rate for local and international students.
