EVENT: DOCOMOMO National Modern Movement Architecture Tour Day—Saturday, June 9, 2007

DOCOMOMO US is planning with our chapters a day of tours nationwide on June 9, 2007 to bring attention – collectively – to the important modern buildings that are in our cities, towns and neighborhoods. The following is a list of tours available from the local chapters.

DOCOMOMO US / Georgia Chapter

“Bush-Brown, Gailey, and Heffernan 1935-1960: Modern Architecture Arrives at Georgia Tech”

Tour Leaders: Thomas Little, David Green

This walking tour traces development of the historic Modern core of Georgia Tech’s campus with an introductory lecture and exhibit of historic drawings and photographs at the 1952 College of Architecture building, a walking tour, and an optional post-tour reception. The event examines this period of rapid expansion between 1947 and 1961 led by Bauhaus-inspired architects Harold Bush-Brown, Gailey and Paul Malcolm Heffernan.

”Modernism in Small Town Texas”

Tour Leaders: W. Mark Gunderson, Gregory S. Ibañez, Robert Meckfessel, and others

This is a walking tour of three graceful (and relatively unadulterated) Modern buildings by O’Neil Ford, located in Denton, Texas. This group of buildings embodies the restrained geometry, craftsmanship, and integration with nature that is associated with his finest work. The tour will end with a picnic lunch and will be followed by an optional tour of Ford’s Little Chapel in the Woods and First Christian Church.

DOCOMOMO US / Chicago Midwest ChapterMarina City

”Modern Landmarks: Mingling with the Great Ones on Dearborn Street”

Tour Leaders: Rolf Achilles

Why are some of Chicago’s greatest modern architectural icons landmarked while others aren’t? Tour Dearborn Street in Chicago’s Loop with local preservationist and art historian Rolf Achilles to learn more about what it takes to landmark buildings of the modern movement, many of which helped win Chicago’s place in architectural history books. The tour will begin in Mies’s famed Federal Plaza on Dearborn and end at Goldberg’s beloved “corncob” Marina City. The tour will also take in important modern outdoor sculptures that add to the city’s urban environment, including Calder’s Flamingo and Picasso’s unnamed masterpiece in front of Daley Center.

DOCOMOMO US / New York-Tri State Chapter

”New Jersey Modern Tour”

Tour Leaders: John Arbuckle, Ed Eckert, Donna Lewis and Robert Geddes.

This day-long bus tour will visit such New Jersey modern landmarks as Eero Saarinen’s Bell Labs, where Lucent archivist Ed Eckert will guide us through the interior of the complex; Louis Kahn’s Jewish Community Center, also known as the Trenton Bath House with Donna Lewis, Director of the Mercer County Planning Division as our guide; buildings at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton including some by his firm with Robert Geddes, FAIA; modern buildings at Princeton University; PA Technologies by Richard Rogers; and the Colonnade & Pavilion Apartments in Newark by Mies.

Meet at east side of 8th Avenue between West 42nd and West 43rd Streets.

The tour will depart and return to Manhattan. Seating is limited

“Downtown Boston Modernism”

Tour Leaders: David Fixler, Henry Moss, Sarah Kelly

This half-day walking tour of the government center and the financial district of Boston will highlight the Government Center Complex including I.M. Pei’s master plan, Boston City Hall by Kallmann, McKinnell and Knowles, the John F. Kennedy Federal Building by The Architects Collaborative, and Lindemann Social Services Building by Paul Rudolph with Desmond and Lord, among others. The tour will continue through the financial district and end with an opportunity for lunch.

“Freeway Park: Exploring the Continuing Legacy of Seattle's Modernist Masterwork”

Tour Leader: Brice Maryman, Landscape Architect

This tour will explore the legacy of Lawrence Halprin and Angela Danadjieva's groundbreaking Modernist masterwork, Freeway Park. We will discuss how development of the park fit into the national and regional context of the time, and will also review on-going efforts to revitalize and preserve the park. Join us for a beautiful evening stroll through the hanging gardens of Freeway Park.
