Dallas Architecture Forum announces new season, opens Oct. 1

The Dallas Architecture Forum is pleased to announce its 14th season.  One film, six lectures plus three special lectures in collaboration with the opening of the Dallas Center for Performing Arts, two symposia, its 365 Modern Home Reception series, an engaging Panel Series focused on issues impacting Dallas, and special members’ only events will make up the season.

The first event of the season is a screening of Visual Acoustics, a film about the world’s greatest architectural photographer, Julius Shulman, on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Magnolia Theatre, 3699 McKinney Ave. in Uptown Dallas.  Director Eric Bricker will be in attendance. Single tickets, available at the door only, are $20 for general admission and $5 for students with I.D. Dallas Architecture Forum members are admitted for free. The reception begins at 6:15 p.m.  For more information, call 214-764-2406 or visit www.dallasarchitectureforum.org. Images are available upon request via Lisa Taylor at Taylor-Made Press, 214-914-1099 or lisatmp@swbell.net

Visual Acoustics explores the monumental career of the late architectural photographer, Julius Shulman, who passed away on July 15th, 2009. Populating his photos with human models and striking landscapes, Shulman combined the organic with the synthetic, melding nature with revolutionary urban design. The resulting images helped shape the careers of some of the greatest architects of the 20th Century, including Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, Pierre Koenig, John Lautner and many others.

Taking aesthetic cues from Shulman’s own sensual and nuanced photography, the film’s narrative is built from a blend of Shulman’s own images and in-depth interviews with architect Frank Gehry, designer Tom Ford, artist Ed Ruscha, actress Kelly Lynch, writer Mitch Glazer, publisher Benedikt Taschen, Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Dante Spinotti and a host of others. By offering unprecedented and exclusive access to his amazing photographic archive and day-to-day life, Shulman's dedicated involvement in the filming process was an incalculable benefit to the film.

Shulman’s career began in 1936 when he began photographing homes designed by the architect Richard Neutra. Shulman was subsequently flooded with commissions from other well-known architects including Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies Van der Rohe. Over the coming years, Shulman became one of the artists responsible for establishing the cohesive “look” of 20th-century Modernist design. See www.juliusshulmanfilm.com for more information.
