World Trade Center threatened in New Orleans

New Orleans, Louisiana. Another mid-century modern building may be demolished in the Crescent City. Edward Durell Stone’s World Trade Center, built as the International Trade Mart, has been under threat since the mid-1990s. Begun in 1959 and partially occupied by 1966, the ITM set the standard for other such structures worldwide. Designed to promote foreign commerce through the Port of New Orleans, the ITM was home to the trade organization, the Dock Board, stevedores, international consulates, shipping companies, a women’s clinic, modistes and an art gallery.

Potential Threat for Sert Designed School in Cambridge

In the latest instance of a potential threat to an important modern era school, the City of Cambridge is in the process of completing a Feasibility Study for Josep Lluis Sert’s Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School (1972) in which the preferred recommendation is the replacement of the school with a new building. This is Sert’s only primary school in the United States and it is located across the street from and complements his earlier Peabody Terrace Graduate Housing complex for Harvard University.

Efforts to Save John Johansen’s Stage Center

John Johansen’s Stage Center in Oklahoma City, OK stands in disuse and disrepair. Originally called the Mummer’s Theatre, the building was closed in 2010 after suffering considerable damage when the theater’s basement flooded. Built in 1970, the Stage Center is composed of three separate structures connected via ramps, tunnels, and tubes that frame an open, central space. The exterior is a series of raw concrete forms, punctuated by brightly colored corrugated steel in red, blue, yellow and orange.

Orange County Government Center Closed and Under Imminent Threat

Movement to demolish the Paul Rudolph’s Orange County Government Center in Goshen, NY (1963) has rapidly progressed since last month’s Hurricane Irene caused it to close due to additional water and mold damage. While officials are working out temporary space for government offices located in the Government Center, County Executive Edward A. Diana is suggesting it may be better to tear down the building than try to repair it. A feasibility study to determine the most economical and efficient plan for the consolidation of county departments was scheduled to be release at the end of the year but is now likely on the fast-track to recommend its demolition.

Please consider signing an online petition to save the historic modern Phillis Wheatley Elementary School which is threatened with demolition. This petition was started by Phyllis Montana-Leblanc. Montana-Leblanc spoke passionately at Friday's hearing before the New Orleans Historic District Landmarks Commission in defense of her alma mater, "If you tear down my school, a part of me dies with it."
