Docomomo US welcome guests to join us for our second travel tour series: Modern Mexico City. This nine-day, eight-night trip will focus exclusively on Mexico City's modern architecture, art and design. Highlights of the tour include a special visit to the house and studio of Luis Barragán and the Barragán designed Gilardi House; many important sites by the Mexican architect Mario Pani including the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) campus (pictured above); and a special full day exploration of the works by Felix Candela including the breathtaking Los Manantiales restaurant. Guests will have the opportunity to visit some of the most important works by Diego Rivera including the murals at the Palacio Nacional and Carcamo de Rio Lerma, with an afternoon visit to the Anahuacali Museum. A full day tour to the archeological site Teotihuacan is planned.

Modern Mexico City will be led by Louise Noelle Gras, Professor and Researcher at the National University of Mexico and long-standing president of Docomomo Mexico. Joining Ms. Gras will be Kathryn O'Rourke, associate professor of art history at Trinity University and author of the recently published book Modern Architecture in Mexico City. Docomomo Mexico and Felix Candela expert, Juan Ignacio del Cueto, rounds out the tour leadership.

Guests will stay at the Camino Real Polanco - the legendary hotel designed by Ricardo Legorreta in 1965.

Study Grant

A Docomomo US Study Grant is available for this foreign travel tour. The Docomomo US Study Grants provide financial support for qualified individuals whose work or educational focus demonstrates a continued interest and commitment in the area or subject of exploration for which the particular study grants are being offered. Applications open at 12 pm EDT on April 13, 2017 and close on June 1, 2017 at 5 pm EDT. Day 1, Saturday, October 14: Arrival at Mexico International Airport

Independent travel to Mexico City. Introductory lecture on history of Mexico City and its architecture.

Day 2, Sunday, October 15: Mexico City: Historic Center/Zocalo

Guests begin in the Zócalo, visit the Cathedral and head over to the Palacio National to see the Rivera murals. After lunch return by the Paseo de la Reforma and Palacio de Bellas Artes.

Day 3, Monday, October 16: Modern Suburbs/Modern Houses

Morning departure to the neighborhood of Colonia Hipódromo-Condesa to visit the Barragán House/Studio (pictured on right); Casa Gilardi and the Ortega Garden. After lunch guests have the opportunity to enjoy the Condesa neighborhood for shopping or dinner.

Day 4, Tuesday, October 17: Modern for the Masses

Morning visits to the Mario Pani designed Multifamiliar Miguel Alemán and Unidad Independencia. Arrive in San Angel to visit the Rivera-Kahlo house and studio and tour the Cecil O’Gorman house. After lunch visit the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and the Barragán designed Casa Prieto Lopez. 

Day 5, Wednesday, October 18: Teotihuacan

Departure to Teotihuacan and visit the archeological site. Lunch at the restaurant LA GRUTA before continuing to Acolman for a visit of the 16th Century Temple and the monastery.

Day 6, Thursday, October 19: Felix Candela in Mexico City

A full day of Felix Candela works led by Docomomo Mexico expert Juan Ignacio del Cueto. In the morning guests will travel to Los Manantiales restaurant in Xochimilco (pictured on right) and the El Altillo Chapel. Lunch at the Candela designed Mercado de Coyoacan with afternoon stops to the Medalla Milagrosa Church and the San Antonio de las Huertas Church.

Day 7, Friday, October 20

Morning visit to the Anthropology Museum and Tamayo Museum. Afternoon departure to Museo "El Eco" and then to Tlatelolco and visit Conjunto habitacional Nonoalco-Tatelolco, Plaza de las Tres Culturas, Church with art work by Mathias Goeritz. 

Day 8, Saturday, October 21

Morning to San Angel for a visit the Bazaar Sábado. Afternoon tour of Las Lomas de Chapultepec and visit the Anglican Church by Carlos Mijares, and probably visit some of Polanco (Conservatorio Nacional by Mario Pani, School by Vladimir Kaspé).

Day 9, Sunday, October 22: After breakfast depart Mexico City

Passenger Deposits

Passenger deposits are $600 per person. Passenger deposits are non-refundable, and cancellation and interruption coverage is strongly recommended in order to protect passengers against cancellation fees. 

Final Payments

Final payments are due at 75 days prior to departure. Reservations received after this date will be on a request basis and must be accompanied by payment in full.
