    Federal Court Halts Demolition of Neutra's Gettysburg Cyclorama Center

    A federal court has halted the National Park Service plan to demolish the 1961 Richard Neutra and Robert Alexander designed Cyclorama Building at Gettysburg.

    In a comprehensive ruling, the United States District Court for the District of Columbia upheld a challenge filed by the Recent Past Preservation Network, Christine Madrid French and Dion Neutra. The court held that the U.S. National Park Service failed to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) before deciding to tear down the historic building, and ordered the agency to consider alternatives to demolition.

    Cape Cod Modern House Trust saves Kugel/Gips House.

    The Cape Cod Modern House Trust will welcome visitors to the Kugel/Gips House, which it restored and updated with the help of volunteers including Fox Diehl Architects. The 2,200-square-foot residence was designed by Charles Zhender, one of the most prolific Modernist architects on the Cape during the 1960s and ’70s.

    The 'Kreuzberg Tower' in Berlin, one of John Hejduk's few realized buildings and one of his largest, is being threatened. After years of neglect, the building's new owner, BerlinHaus Verwaltung GmbH, plans to significantly alter the exterior of the building.

    Photo Modeling of Architectural Heritage of the 20th Century

    Registration for the international competition on photo modelling of significant buildings of the 20th century, open to architecture students, will be closed on March 26, 2010.

    The contest invites the architects of tomorrow to express their vision of a building of the last century, built between 1901 and 2000, as an architectural description based on panoramic images and / or 3D models of the building in its current state. The competition takes place entirely online.

    Eduardo Fernando Catalano was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and came to the United States on scholarships to the Universities of Pennsylvania and Harvard. In 1945, he entered a General Motors design competition using a hyperbolic paraboloid, and won second place out of 914 entries.

    He was a graduate student of Walter Gropius and an undergraduate student of Marcel Breuer, both professors at Harvard and considered the pioneering masters of modernist architecture.
